Nissan Gives 16 Gamers a Shot at Becoming a Real Professional Racecar Driver
If you think playing video games is a waste of time and doesn't apply in real life, think again. Nissan North America has invited the 16 fastest Gran Turismo 5 gamers to take part in their new reality TV show hosted in conjunction with Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC. And no, Nissan isn't planning on airing a show solely about 16 people sitting around with controllers in their hands...They're planning to test just how well their gaming skills translate to real-time on the track!
The reality TV series features bits from three distinct phases of production. First, there was the Tournament. This is where 54,000 gamers battled out entrance to the National Finals in Florida, for three whole days. Second, GT Academy's top 16 players were sent to an intensive seven-day racing academy at the world-renowned Silverstone Racing Complex. Finalist gamers were eliminated throughout the week-long event until finally, on day seven, the GT Academy USA, "Season 1" champion was crowned.
The third and final phase of production for Nissan North America's new reality TV show involved creating a five-part series which started airing on SPEED, last week. The final show of the series promises to reveal the GT Academy USA winner, who has earned a place among the European GT Academy racers and embark on a career as a professional, Nissan-sponsored racecar driver.
Speaking on the Nissan North America's decision to create GT Academy USA, Jon Brancheau, VP, Marketing, Nissan North America said, "GT Academy USA will create a life changing experience for gamers, celebrating the authenticity of Gran Turismo 5 for Sony PlayStation, and real life racing and performance, innovation for Nissan GT Academy..."1
Given Nissan's usage of "Season 1", Dick Scott Nissan, located at 42175 Michigan Avenue Canton, MI can't help but think they're already scheming over Season 2. If so, will you be tuning in?
